Exploring Identity and Expression: Artist Sarah Almehairi

Sarah Almehairi’s (1998), journey as an artist began at a young age, nurtured by her innate curiosity and creativity. Her exploration of various mediums, including mixed media, sculpture, painting, book art, and fiber art, reflects her multifaceted approach to artistic expression.

At the heart of Almehairi's art lies a deep exploration of themes such as identity, language, materiality, and memory. Through her narrative works and abstract creations, she challenges conventional modes of artistic production and questions the cultural and social constructs embedded within traditional artistic practices. By engaging with geometric forms, she extracts and defines a structural language read time and time again to suggest a form other than its own – a map, a sentence, a puzzle piece. Through the process, they are broken down, built, and reassembled as continuous iterations of themselves.

In an interview with CityPages Magazine, she offered insights into her creative process and inspirations. Drawing from her childhood experiences and her close relationship with her mother, who encouraged her creative pursuits, Almehairi spoke about the importance of hands-on creation and collaborative endeavors. She described her studio space as organized and clean, reflecting her preference for clean lines and intentional use of space in her artworks. When asked about her sources of inspiration, Almehairi emphasized the significance of her immediate environment and the constant search for deeper meanings. Drawing inspiration from poetry and writings, she shared how language intertwines with her practice, allowing for a shift in perspective and exploration of new ideas.
