TAKUYA YAMAGUCHI HAIR

The Japanese hairstylist, based in New York seven years is a creative working in fashion, editorials and the commercial industry. What caught our attention is his stunning personal project which was a result of the pandemic. Your greatest inspirations or influences?

  • I love and am inspired greatly by fashion and art photography- For example, Tim walker, Paolo Roversi, and Julia Hetta.

  • I’m also inspired by African hair always - the shape, texture, colors…it’s very fun to dig into their culture and hair history.

Tell us a bit about your creative process and things you are looking forward to this year..

First I decide on the material I am going to use. From there, I start my research process and use different sources of references including old fashion magazines, photo books, art, etc. I typically draw 8 to 10 different sketches and then I actually start working on the actual hair style. This year I’m looking forward to publish my photography book of my work.

How has this year changed your creativity or how you see the world changing moving forward?

After posting many mannequin hair photos on my instagram, I got many job offers so I can see that those projects helped me get more creative as I had more time to dig deeper into my research and have more time to experiment than before.

Who do you consider to be an icon of our time?

All the doctors and nurses who work in the front line all over the world, they are the real heroes and icons.

Do you think the art world needs to change, and if so how do you feel it can improve?

I have no idea how to change or improve it. NFTs will be a big game changer so I’m interested to see how it’s going to work out and definitely would take the opportunity to join it if I get a chance.

What does wellbeing mean to you?

I can feel “wellbeing” now. I have jobs which I love, I have family and friends which I love, I have time to think and create my art work and find happiness when my creations stimulate or motivate other talented people.
