Phoebe Jamieson An Artist's Journey from Australia to New York City

Phoebe Jamieson An Artist's Journey from Australia to New York City

Moving from the vast landscapes of Australia to the bustling streets of New York City may seem like a gigantic shift for some, but for artist Phoebe Jamieson, it’s been a transformative journey of adaptation, growth, and creative exploration.

"The change in my surroundings brought about a shift in perspective. Moving to such a dynamic and culturally rich city like New York has injected new energy and vibrancy into my creative process. Every corner holds a story, a piece of history, or a source of inspiration”. For Phoebe being an artist is not just a profession—it's a fundamental aspect of her identity. "I create because I need to," they explain. "Art has been my preferred mode of expression since a young age, a language through which I can communicate my innermost thoughts, feelings, and ideas."

Her multidisciplinary approach to art—incorporating both painting and sculpture—allows Phoebe to explore concepts from various perspectives. Painting offers her freedom to explore ideas with fluidity and patience, while sculpture delves into ideas with depth and multiple viewpoints. She is passionate about the intimate nature of the creative process. "Human emotions are multifaceted and ever-changing. I often find myself drawn to the interplay of vibrant and muted hues as a way to convey this complex intimacy."

Phoebe finds the concept of the inner child particularly fascinating. "As we age, we often lose touch with the playful, curious, and joyful aspects of ourselves that are inherent in childhood. The process of translating emotions into art involves a delicate balance of color, form, and composition." She also seeks to capture the nuanced spectrum of human emotions, from joy and vitality to introspection and vulnerability. "Each brushstroke, each color choice, becomes a form of self-expression.”

Is there a specific piece or collection of yours that comes to mind when you think about that process of translating emotions and experiences into your work?

My upcoming exhibition, titled Through Her Eyes, marks a significant moment for me as it will be the first time I showcase my paintings and sculptures together. The abstract paintings in Through Her Eyes encourage individual interpretation and personal connection through each stroke of thinned acrylic paint and pigment on raw canvas. In addition to these paintings, the collection includes a series of playful and dream-like ceramic pieces. These spirited abstract ceramics likewise reflect my inner world. Crafted from fired clay and intricately painted, these sculptures reflect my desire to reconnect with the inner child and express hopefulness through form and color. This exhibition represents a culmination of my artistic journey, a celebration of the beauty found in vulnerability and the power of creativity to illuminate our inner landscapes.

Artistic Inspirations?

  • Helen Frankenthaler is a towering figure in the world of abstract expressionism, known for her innovative technique of staining raw canvas with thinned acrylic paint. Her ability to create expansive, ethereal compositions that evoke a sense of fluidity and movement has profoundly impacted my work.

  • Joan Mitchell's paintings have also been a significant source of inspiration. Her bold use of color and energetic brushwork create works alive with emotion and vitality.

  • Georgia O'Keeffe's iconic depictions of flowers and landscapes have long captivated me.

  • Ken Price's ceramic sculptures have also been a source of inspiration. Price's playful forms, often resembling otherworldly creatures or landscapes, speak to my interest in the intersection of abstraction and storytelling.

  • Lastly, the psychological concepts of Carl Jung have had a profound influence on my artistic practice. Jung's ideas about the collective unconscious, archetypes, and the symbolism of the inner child have provided a rich source of inspiration for my exploration of identity, emotion, and the human psyche.
